Our Experience

We visited Hakone and Kinnotake Tonosawa in March 2019 on our 15-day Japan trip. We strategically placed the stop in the middle of the trip to give ourselves a chance to relax before working our way south.

Upon initial arrival, we dropped off our bags at the front desk. The staff provided some welcome drinks and small cakes while we completed check-in paperwork. We arrived early, and our room wasn’t quite ready yet, so we headed out into Hakone to do some sightseeing!

Once we returned, we were escorted to our room and provided a choice of yukata for dinner. We’d booked a “Shizuku” room next to their koi pond on the lowest level.

The room had a massive bed that was heavenly and a large private hot spring bath. We spent some time soaking in the bath and relaxing between arrival and dinner. The water temperature was perfect.

Dinner was kaiseki style, a traditional Japanese dinner with multiple courses. There was a wide variety of dishes; it was an excellent opportunity to try foods we’d never had before while also eating some favorites. The waitress explained what each dish was as it was served, which was greatly appreciated. All in all, dinner was fresh and delicious, accompanied by a nice window view of the forest surrounding the ryokan. Dinner was long due to the number of courses, but we were in no rush.

After dinner, we spent more time relaxing in our private hot spring tub. The resort offers public baths if you are interested in a more traditional experience, but we didn’t try them out.

In the morning, we head back to the dining room for breakfast. We had the option to choose between western-style or Japanese-style breakfast. We both chose Japanese. Breakfast was delectable, and we had some good laughs about a few foods we’d previously never tried.

Our one-night stay quickly came to an end. Everything about the ryokan was completely relaxing. The overall experience was top-notch, from the fantastic room to the impeccable service. It was the perfect relaxing getaway in the middle of a busy trip. We definitely would return to stay again!
