If you only have one day to explore south of Kyoto, you don’t have to choose between hiking through iconic red torii gates, tasting world-famous matcha, and feeding friendly free-roaming deer.
Thanks to the JR Nara Line, you can effortlessly hit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Uji, and Nara all in a single action-packed day. Here is the exact hour-by-hour itinerary to pull off this whirlwind trip.

7:00 AM – Early Morning at Fushimi Inari & The Summit Hike
Start your day as early as possible, ideally no later than 7:00 AM. Head to Fushimi Inari Taisha early. This will let you skip the heavy tour groups and enjoy a more peaceful walk up Mount Inari.
Getting There: Catch the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station to JR Inari Station (approximately 5 minutes). The shrine entrance is directly across from the station; you can’t miss it!
The Summit Hike: While most tourists stop at the lower Senbon Torii loops, keep pushing upward toward the Yotsutsuji intersection and onward to the summit (Ichinomine). The full loop takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. It isn’t easy, but it’s definitely worth it; make sure you have plenty of water. There are fewer people the closer you get to the top, so if you want photos without others in them, wait until later in the hike.
Goshuin Stop: Pick up your official shrine stamp (goshuin) at the main shrine office before starting your hike. There are additional goushuin along the loop if you are looking to collect as many as you can.

10:00 AM – Matcha Break in Uji
After descending Mount Inari, hop back on the JR Nara Line train down to Uji Station (approximately 20 minutes). Uji is Japan’s matcha capital, making it the perfect mid-morning pitstop. Most of the matcha shops open around 9:00 to 10:00 AM, so arriving around this time is perfect if you want to buy some matcha powder before it sells out for the day.
What to Do: Take a quick stroll along the Uji River or toward Byodoin Temple’s approach street, lined with historic tea shops. Some of the tea shops are very popular and sell out of their matcha powder early in the day. Head farther into Uji to other matcha shops if those closest to the station are already sold out.
We stopped at Itoh Kyuemon, Nakamura Tokichi, Mitsuboshien Kanbayashi Sannyu, and Masuda Chaho
Matcha Tea & Ice Cream: Grab a cup of fresh matcha tea and treat yourself to a rich matcha soft-serve ice cream dusted with pure green tea powder. They are delicious!

1:00 PM – Lunch & Mochi Show in Nara
Board the JR train from Uji to JR Nara Station (approximately 30 minutes). From the station, walk down the Sanjo-dori shopping street toward the park area.
Mochi Demonstration: Stop by Nakatanidou to watch their famous, high-speed pounders make fresh yomogi mochi. Grab a warm, soft mochi to enjoy on the spot. Sessions are about every 30 minutes, depending on sales demand.
Lunch: Head right upstairs above Nakatanidou to Nara Sanjo Curry for a rich, steakhouse-style Japanese beef curry lunch. It’s fast, delicious, and a way to escape the street crowds. Plus you still might get to watch a little bit of the chaos below through the second story windows.

2:30 PM – Nara Park, Shrines & Bowing Deer
Spend the afternoon exploring Nara Park, home to hundreds of freely roaming sika deer considered sacred messengers in the Shinto religion.
The Deer: You can buy special deer crackers (shika-senbei) from park vendors for ¥200. They can run out of crackers later in the day if it’s busy. If this is a must-do activity, make it a priority to grab crackers as soon as you arrive at the park. You can bow to the deer before giving them a cracker; many will bow back. However, the deer can also be aggressive about demanding the crackers, so just be on your guard.
Tōdai-ji Temple: Walk through Nara Park to Tōdai-ji, one of the world’s largest wooden buildings housing the towering Great Buddha (Daibutsu). Entrance to the hall is ¥800 per adult. There is a goshuin available inside the hall.

5:30 PM – Getting Back to Kyoto
After exploring Nara Park, head back to JR Nara Station or Kintetsu-Nara Station for your return trip:
JR Nara Line: Takes about 45 minutes on the Miyakoji Rapid Train straight back to Kyoto Station.
Kintetsu Line Alternative: If you prefer, the Kintetsu Limited Express trains run straight to Kyoto Station in about 35 minutes (requires a seat reservation).
Logistics & Pro-Tips for This Route:
- IC Card Ready: Tap through every station seamlessly using your Suica, Pasmo, or Icoca card loaded on your phone or physical card. Make sure you have cash in case you need to top up your card.
- Train Line Consistency: Use the JR Line for the entire route (Kyoto → Inari → Uji → Nara → Kyoto) so you don’t need to transfer between different railway networks.
- Want to Sleep In?: Move Fushimi Inari to the back end of the day and start your day in Uji. You can still visit the torii gates and hike up the mountain in the evening and after dark. Make sure you bring a light if you visit at night.
