Gary Danko is a fine-dining restaurant in San Francisco, previously 1-Star Michelin, just a block from Ghirardelli Square.

Gary Danko could be considered more reasonably priced than some of the Michelin-starred restaurants in downtown San Francisco. However, don’t expect a cheap meal; the prices are still fine-dining and will set you back at least $150 per person after taxes.

There are different dining options and an extensive drink menu. You can choose from a tasting menu or build a 3 to 5-course meal. The entrees are not small, as they are in many fine-dining restaurants, so you won’t be hungry if you choose the 3-course meal option.

Overall Experience

Our reservation was for 6:30 PM, and we were seated immediately after our coats were taken for storage.

Menus, water, and amuse-bouche were promptly delivered to our table as we were getting settled. We’d looked over the menu before arriving, so we knew we would both be ordering a 3-course dinner. My husband also ordered a drink.

All the food and drinks were served promptly, and we never waited more than a few minutes for our plates to be cleared and the next course to be delivered. Each dish was described as it was placed in front of us. Plating was fun but not pretentious. All of the food we tried was delicious and filling!

At the end of our meal, we were given small treats and pineapple cakes to take home for later.

All of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. While I always feel out of place at fine dining restaurants, the staff made us feel welcome. There was also a wide variety of guests at the restaurant; the diners didn’t seem to favor any particular age group.

We had a great time and enjoyed the food. I would consider returning if I revisit San Francisco!
